Shopping calculations · Researched · BetterBuyWay editorial
I’ve been ordering from iHerb for years, including protein powder and other products. For a protein order, comparing the tub prices is only the first step. A larger container, a different serving size and the delivery quote can change which option is better value.
Start with the exact label
Match the flavour, formula and package size. A scoop is not a universal unit: different powders use different serving weights. Compare the grams of protein shown on each label as well as the number of servings.
For a concrete label example, California Gold Nutrition’s published listing for its unflavoured 454 g Whey Protein Isolate gives a 31 g serving, approximately 15 servings per container and 27 g of protein per serving. [1] That is a specification example, not an endorsement or a claim that every flavour has the same label.
Two useful price calculations
Price per serving = discounted product price ÷ labelled servings.
Price per 25 g of protein = product price ÷ total labelled grams of protein × 25.
The second calculation helps when two products define a serving differently. Use the same basis for both, and remember that “about 15 servings” is an approximate label value.
| Illustrative tub | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $30 | $48 |
| Servings | 15 | 30 |
| Protein per serving | 27 g | 24 g |
| Price per serving | $2.00 | $1.60 |
| Price per 25 g protein | About $1.85 | About $1.67 |
These prices and product pairings are hypothetical. Tub B has a higher sticker price but lower cost on both measures. That tells you about cost, not taste, suitability or product quality.
Add shipping before deciding
For a basket containing only the protein, add its actual delivery charge to the product price before dividing. If A costs $30 plus $8 delivery, its delivered cost is about $2.53 per serving. If B’s $48 basket qualifies for free delivery, its figure stays $1.60. Again, these are invented shipping quotes used to show the arithmetic.
In a mixed basket, the calculation needs an assumption. You could allocate delivery by merchandise value, or compare the full basket with and without the protein. State the method; quietly assigning the whole delivery charge to one product can make the comparison misleading.
Why the bigger package is not automatically better
A bulk purchase only helps if you will use the product. Before paying more, check the label, any relevant allergen information, the displayed best-by date where available and your storage space. A new flavour is a different decision from replenishing one you already like.
iHerb’s support information says the discounted basket must meet the applicable free-shipping minimum, and carrier or item restrictions can change eligibility. Shipping estimates also depend on destination, weight and the selected service. [2,3] Select the delivery country before treating a screenshot from another market as your price.
